![]() They have their own voice, personality, and relationships. Some of them are inexperienced and cheap, those with experience are more expansive, and the can be hired in late game when the player can pay their fees and has a good reputation.Įach mercenary is unique, some of them are ex-military, doctors, mechanics, criminals and psychos. The player must hire mercenaries, and there is a wide range to chose from (about 60 of them), and this is where the games really shine. Funds must be wisely used to hire mercenaries, and also pay guards and tappers. The catch is that you have limited funds: you are being paid by an amount of sap which is collected by your workers (tappers). The player is hired by Jack and Brenda and by contacting mercenaries from Association of International Mercenaries (A.I.M), it’s the player’s job to recapture the island, get Richards into business and eliminate Santino. Soon Santino hired mercenaries, burned the Richards’s research facility, and has nearly taken over the island. One of the trusted employees Lucas Santino saw the potential for greater profit and managed to persuade Jack to give him permission to establish a second facility on the island. Scientists Jack and his daughter Brenda Richards who discovered the trees established a research facility in order to study the trees, its sap and solve the reproduction problem. These trees are harvested for their sap which is processed and then sold for profit, but there is a catch the trees can’t reproduce. The story is set on the island of Metavira, which after nuclear testing now houses unique “Fallow Tree” which can cure any disease. Games such as X-COM defined the genre, much in the same way Fire Emblem did in the east, but Jagged Alliance perhaps gave the most freedom in the genre.ĭeveloped by Madlabs Software and published by Sir-Tech, released in June of 1994, two months after X-COM, it offered a different take on a similar formula, but with more personality and charm. The main difference is that the games created in the West allowed more freedom than their Japanese counterparts. Particularly if you assault Drassen at night, which will shorten the ranges and make autofire more effective. While tactical-RPGs might be associated with Japan, the West also has a history of its own. I would suggest starting with a team which includes a skilled medic and at least one "sniper" character (That is, someone selected for a high marksmanship.) You might not get a rifle this way, but an SMG is pretty good too. If you spend all your cash on one character, you can't include them. They might not be great in combat, but will help your team get back to full health quickly. I mean, Fox and Spider are an inexpensive hires and very good medics. Lynx? I think that hiring one merc at the start is probably a mistake when you're starting out, because it means only one person shooting, and even if they're great, if any of you get hurt, you'll take longer to recover.Īnd that expensive merc means no other skills. I don't know about your experience, but being prone DOES give a bonus to attack and a bonus to defense which exceed crouching. I have tried laying prone for gunfights, but it only seems to make them blind and not hit anything, in stark contrast to enemy soldiers, who become untouchable elite snipers when prone. Seroster, my mercs walk around while crouching mostly. I'm playing 1.10, Gold edition, but I can't find that feature Afterburner talks about. I really can't see any reason to hire any other merc first, which probably shows I'm getting something wrong, as nobody seems to have him as a first choice. I chose Lynx because he's affordable, has good attributes and he carries a rifle. Who is that Dimitri guy? I dislike Ira because she's not that good as a doctor and Lynx can do the same things AND hit the broad side of a barn. Right now my team consists of my custom merc, Lynx and Ira. How do you make your mercenary a night ops specialist? Is it better to make them be a marskman or a support kind of guy? ![]() It seems I did the wrong thing, but then again I have only taken control of Drassen and the first SAM site so maybe it's not too late to restart it again. Well, I just restarted the game since I wasn't too happy with some of my initial decisions.
